The HSI staff includes air traffic control personnel with previous experience at both the Certified Professional Controller and facility air traffic manager levels. They participate in operational test and evaluation of new equipment and work with program office personnel to resolve usability issues and help the workforce better understand new equipment applications and differences between the legacy systems. They provide subject matter expertise from a field perspective, participate in program reviews and technical meetings where operational air traffic control experience is required, review and comment on requirements and test documents, develop operational concepts of use and assist field sites in integrating those concepts into the aviation operating environment. HSI is currently providing air traffic support for the FAA’s en route automation modernization (ERAM), Traffic Management Advisor (TMA), User Request Evaluation Tool (URET), Required Performance Navigation (RNAV/RNP), and O’Hare Terminal Modernization programs.

HSI has over 14 years of corporate experience in designing and conducting human factors assessments and plans, assessing human-computer interface designs; planning, conducting, and evaluating human-in-the-loop simulations and field tests. We assist our clients in identifying potential human factors risks and finding ways to mitigate their impact. We are a recognized leader in the human factors analysis, testing, and deployment of automated decision-making tools used by air traffic controllers and management personnel and the integration of those tools with other legacy systems. We support key research, development, and deployment of new systems and procedures for the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure the safe and efficient movement of aircraft in the National Airspace System. Much of our effort, such as our work on Traffic Management Advisor, En Route Automation Modernization, and Area Navigation, supports the industry’s Next Generation air traffic control initiatives.

HSI can help your organization meet its Safety Management System compliance requirements. We have worked with the Federal Aviation Administration on the design of its Safety Management System (SMS) and Safety Risk Management (SRM) process since the fall of 2004. HSI attended the first SRM Operations Practitioner Class and has three staff members certified in SMS/SRM. We are working closely with the Air Traffic Organization’s Safety and Operations Support Manager and Safety Engineer to establish the vision and goals for implementing SMS in the en route environment and to develop its multi-year implementation plan. We provide briefings, course materials, and conduct the FAA SMS/SRM Operations Course at facilities throughout the country. We have performed numerous safety audits and serve on SRM panels.
